Like the blockchain, the Tangle, as used in the system of IOTA<\/a>, is a distributed database in peer-to-peer networks<\/a>. To be able to carry out a transaction, IOTA users are obliged to validate two or more other transactions. <\/p>\n

What is the Tangle?<\/h2>\n

After the introduction of Bitcoin<\/a> in 2008, b<\/span>lockchain technology<\/span> has become a household name<\/span>. A b<\/span>lockchain<\/span> <\/span>is understood to be<\/span> a distributed database that provides an immutable <\/span>record<\/span> of transactions and digital assets. However, there is a <\/span>another<\/span> technology called <\/span>Tangle<\/span> that claims to outperform the blockchain.<\/span> <\/p>\n

With the <\/span>Tangle<\/span> <\/span>we are talking about a <\/span>distributed ledger technology<\/span>, developed by the IOTA <\/span>Foundation<\/span> .<\/span>. <\/span>Basically,<\/span> it <\/span> pursues <\/span> the same purpose as the blockchain: <\/span> the simple and secure processing of transactions in a decentralized environment. <\/span>In <\/span> contrast to blockchain technology, however, <\/span>Tangle<\/span> is<\/span> not based on a chain of blocks, but on a <\/span>directed acyclic graph<\/span> (DAG). <\/span>This DAG, like the blockchain, is a<\/span> distributed database<\/span>, also <\/span> there is <\/span> no central authority or instance such as a bank or government. <\/span><\/p>\n

The difference is that <\/span>transactions are not<\/span> grouped into blocks and linked linearly as with blockchain technology<\/span> but are represented as a chain of transactions. The <\/span>Tangle<\/span> graph can be thought of as a kind of network of transactions.<\/span><\/p>\n

Understanding Tangle<\/h2>\n

To better understand this technique, <\/span>consider the following analogy: <\/span>Persons A, B and C want to communicate via a blockchain-based system. <\/span>For this, A would have to pass information to B, who then forwards it to C. <\/span>However, it would be much faster and more efficient if <\/span>A would pass the information directly to C.<\/span> <\/p>\n

That is exactly the difference between a blockchain and DAG technology, in simple words. <\/span>In a blockchain, the blocks A, B and C are connected to each other. For a message to get from A to C, it must first be checked by B. <\/span><\/p>\n

With a DAG, on the other hand, all network participants are directly connected to each other, which allows A to send a message directly to C <\/span>and update B at the same time.<\/span> <\/p>\n

How does <\/span>Tangle<\/span> work?<\/span><\/h2>\n

In the <\/span>Tangle<\/span> network, transactions are validated by the participants, <\/span>instead<\/span> <\/span>of<\/span> <\/span>miners<\/span> or <\/span>validators<\/span> within <\/span>a blockchain network<\/span>.<\/span> <\/span>This means that every participant who sends a transaction can also contribute to validating other transactions within the network.<\/span><\/p>\n

To be valid, each individual<\/span> transaction in the <\/span>Tangle<\/span> network must confirm at least two other transactions<\/span>.<\/span> Through this confirmation, the transaction is validated within the network and a new transaction can be executed. In contrast to blockchain technology, there are no <\/span>Tangle<\/span> rewards for validating transactions.<\/span><\/p>\n

Another important feature <\/span>of<\/span> <\/span>Tangle<\/span> technology<\/span> is that <\/span>it<\/span> is more scalable than the <\/span>blockchain<\/span> is. This is because when using blockchain technology, each node within the network <\/span>,<\/span> must process each transaction and each block. The larger the network becomes, the more resources are needed to operate it. In the <\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

Advantages of <\/span>Tangle<\/span><\/h2>\n

Tangle<\/span> offers some advantages over blockchain technology. One of the most important advantages is that <\/span>Tangle<\/span> is significantly faster. Since each node in <\/span>Tangle<\/span> only needs to validate a portion of the transactions, transactions are processed faster than in the blockchain.
