Satoshis are the smallest unit of a Bitcoin<\/a>\u2014equivalent to the cent of the euro.<\/p>\n

How much BTC is a Satoshi?<\/h3>\n

1 Bitcoin can be divided into 100 million transferable units. Accordingly, 100 million satoshis are one bitcoin, and 0.00000001 BTC is one satoshi. The smallest unit of a bitcoin is named after the inventor of the largest and oldest cryptocurrency<\/a>\u2014Satoshi Nakamoto<\/a>. Who is behind Satoshi Nakamoto is still unclear to this day.<\/p>\n

Historically, the idea of referring to smaller units of Bitcoin as SAT first appeared in late 2010. A BitcoinTalk user named Ribuck suggested calling 1\/100 of a bitcoin (0.01 BTC) a satoshi. At the time, this was the smallest displayable unit. At that point, the Bitcoin community couldn\u2019t agree either way. Only months later did the topic become relevant again and was then decided. In another thread on the Bitcoin forum titled “More divisibility required – move the decimal point”<\/a>, the discussion continued and was ultimately settled in the thread Bitcent?<\/a>. The users agreed on: <\/p>\n

1 satoshi = 1 microbitcent (smallest unit)<\/p>\n

100 million satoshis = 1 bitcoin<\/p>\n
