The Merge refers to the merging of the previous Ethereum main chain with the so-called Beacon Chain.<\/p>\n<p>With the Merge, Ethereum transitioned from its previous Proof of Work consensus mechanism to a Proof of Stake-based consensus. It was a standalone blockchain based on Proof of Stake. On its own, it could process neither user accounts nor <a href=\"https:\/\/www.coinpro.ch\/en\/knowledge\/what-are-smart-contracts-explanation-for-beginners-examples\/\">smart contracts<\/a>. Its job was to coordinate staking and later be merged with the main chain.<\/p>\n<p>Even before the Merge, investors could <a href=\"https:\/\/www.coinpro.ch\/en\/knowledge\/cryptocurrencies-explained-what-is-staking\/\">stake<\/a> ETH via the Beacon Chain. Measured by staked capital, Ethereum was already the most significant Proof-of-Stake blockchain even before the official switch\u2014ahead of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.coinpro.ch\/en\/knowledge\/what-is-solana-basics-of-the-sol-cryptocurrency\/\">Solana<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.coinpro.ch\/en\/knowledge\/what-is-cardano-and-how-does-it-work\/\">Cardano<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2>Why did Ethereum need the Merge?<\/h2>\n<p>Ethereum went live publicly on July 30, 2015. Over the years, the original technology reached its limits. The base layer processes only around 15 transactions per second. When demand was high, that led to congestion, long wait times, and high network fees.<\/p>\n<p>The most important reason for the Merge, however, was energy consumption. Proof of Work relied on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.coinpro.ch\/en\/knowledge\/what-is-mining\/\">mining<\/a> and therefore high electricity usage. Many critics considered that no longer up to date. Proof of Stake doesn\u2019t require this computing power.<\/p>\n<h2>How did the Merge work technically?<\/h2>\n<p>The timing was determined by the network\u2019s miners. Their computing power determined the mining difficulty. The developers defined a Total Terminal Difficulty (TTD). Once this value was reached, the Merge began. The TTD was exactly 58&#8217;750&#8217;000&#8217;000&#8217;000&#8217;000&#8217;000&#8217;000.<\/p>\n<h3>Bellatrix and Paris upgrade<\/h3>\n<p>Technically, the Merge consisted of two steps. The Bellatrix upgrade prepared the Beacon Chain on September 6, 2022. The Paris upgrade kicked off the main chain once the TTD was reached. The actual transition was completed after just a few minutes. According to <a href=\"https:\/\/ethereum.org\/en\/energy-consumption\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">data from the Ethereum Foundation<\/a>, the network\u2019s electricity consumption fell by around 99.95%. Before the Merge, it was about 112 terawatt-hours per year. Afterward, only a fraction of that remained.<\/p>\n<p>Instead of miners, validators have secured the network since the Merge. If you want to run your own validator, you have to stake 32 ETH. If you don\u2019t follow the rules, you risk penalties. This principle is called slashing. For miners, the Merge meant the end. From the Merge onward, any computing power provided for Ethereum is useless.<\/p>\n<h2>What happened to Ethereum miners?<\/h2>\n<p>With the switch to Proof of Stake, miners\u2019 computing power became worthless for Ethereum. Even before the Merge, many announced they would turn away from ETH. Some miners switched to Ethereum Classic (ETC), which still uses Proof of Work to this day. Another group split off its own blockchain with EthereumPoW (ETHW). This fork is based on a copy of Ethereum, but it kept the old consensus mechanism.<\/p>\n<p>For regular investors, this dispute didn\u2019t matter. Your ETH remained unchanged on the main chain. Anyone who received ETHW got a separate token on its own blockchain, which has since lost significant relevance.<\/p>\n<h2>What the Merge did not change<\/h2>\n<p>Here we clear up a common misconception. Proof of Stake alone does not lead to better scalability. The switch merely gives the blockchain the option for future improvements. So the Merge did not lead to any immediate increase in scalability.<\/p>\n<p>Transaction fees didn\u2019t drop because of the Merge either. The base layer continued to process around 15 transactions per second. Actual scaling was meant to come via other approaches that followed only after the Merge.<\/p>\n<h2>What came after the Merge?<\/h2>\n<p>The Merge was just one step in a longer development. You can follow the further plan on the <a href=\"https:\/\/ethereum.org\/roadmap\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">official Ethereum roadmap<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>In April 2023, the Shanghai upgrade followed, also called Shapella. Only then could validators withdraw their staked ETH again. In March 2024, the Dencun upgrade introduced so-called blobs. These significantly reduced fees on Layer-2 networks. In May 2025, the Pectra upgrade followed with improvements for validators and wallets. At the end of 2025, the next step began with Fusaka, with further upgrades planned for 2026.<\/p>\n<p>Instead of the originally planned shard chains, Ethereum now uses a rollup-centric approach. Layer-2 networks handle transactions, while the main chain provides security and consensus.<\/p>\n<h2>Ethereum 2.0: an outdated term<\/h2>\n<p>For a long time, people talked about the switch to Ethereum 2.0. The Ethereum Foundation no longer uses this term today. It created the false impression of a new, separate blockchain. Instead, people talk about a Consensus Layer and an Execution Layer, which together form a single network.<\/p>\n<p>If you still read about ETH 2.0 or an ETH2 token, be careful. There is no separate ETH2 token and there never has been.<\/p>\n<h2>What investors needed to keep in mind during the Merge<\/h2>\n<p>For regular investors, the rule was: there was nothing to do. Nothing changed about the Ethereum you held. A token migration wasn\u2019t necessary. But this is exactly where scammers stepped in. There were repeated <a href=\"https:\/\/www.coinpro.ch\/en\/knowledge\/crypto-scam-the-most-well-known-methods-at-a-glance\/\">crypto scams<\/a> that pretended users needed to convert to ETH2 in order to steal their money.<\/p>\n<p>It looked different for active participants. Miners needed to know that their hardware would become useless for Ethereum. Node operators had to update their software in time so their node would keep running.<\/p>\n<h2>How did the Merge affect the Ethereum price?<\/h2>\n<p>The Merge also had consequences for the price. Many analysts assumed the lower energy demand would attract institutional investors. Thanks to the Merge and the London upgrade in 2021, Ethereum also became slightly deflationary at times. That means that under certain conditions, more ETH is burned than newly issued.<\/p>\n<p>In the short term, the price rose before the Merge and then flattened again afterward.
