Im Review: Das Hardware-Wallet Trezor One

As already mentioned in our infographic on the dos and don’ts of digital currencies: Secure storage of bitcoins and associated keys is essential. One of the safest methods of storage is undoubtedly so-called hardware wallets. The best-known digital wallets include the products from Ledger and Trezor. And the top seller at Trezor is the Trezor One model. We took a closer look at it.

The Features of the Trezor One

The Trezor comes very well packaged – manipulations on the way to the buyer would be immediately noticeable. In addition, its housing is ultrasonically welded. This also applies here: manipulations by opening would be immediately visible to the buyer. During commissioning, the simple handling and initial setup are noticeable. In addition, the wallet is one of the so-called multi-currency wallets. It supports well over 500 coins/tokens. The complete list of all supported coins can be found on this page from Trezor. The wallet can be used with Windows, Mac OSx, Linux, Chrome OS and Android phones.

At first glance, the wallet looks a bit like a car key. It has two buttons on the front and a slim design. There is also a display on the front of the device. This OLED screen is quite small and only shows 128×64 pixels, which means six lines with very small text – so be careful if you have a reading weakness :-). There is no battery in the device. Therefore, the wallet relies on an external power supply from a computer via a USB port. By the way: the wallet is available in two colors – black and white.

The Security of the Trezor One

Hardware wallets are already by definition one of the safest ways to store cryptocurrencies (only paper wallets are safer). Like many other hardware wallets, the Trezor One also supports the U2F industry standard. In addition to an access password, this serves as proof of authorization, for example for web-based services, and can also be used in combination with digital identity documents to determine identity. The wallet also offers the best possible protection of the stored keys with the latest cryptographic algorithms.

The Password Manager as an Add-On

The wallet provides its own password manager Chrome extension. This makes it possible to store all your passwords securely encrypted on the free cloud service Dropbox or on Google Drive. The keys for the passwords are generated on the hardware wallet, making it impossible for third parties to access these passwords.

Conclusion

The Trezor One Wallet is not one of the most popular and best-selling hardware wallets for nothing. It is characterized by simple operation and the greatest possible security (even if 100% security is never possible). In addition, the additional function of the password manager is really very useful in this day and age.
