Midnight Passport: How Cardano Plans to Attract Billions of Users

Midnight Passport is intended to be Cardano’s concept for mass adoption—Cardano founder Charles Hoskinson recently announced this in an X post. Midnight Passport is an onboarding concept designed to help users get started with Midnight. Midnight is a privacy-focused sidechain of Cardano.

The concept is currently in development, Hoskinson explained in an interview with CoinDesk. In its full version, Midnight Passport is intended to help users set up a comprehensive structure for using cryptocurrencies in just 60 seconds. In under a minute, users should be able to receive tokens, create a wallet, and connect it to a name service.

This should significantly lower the barrier to entry for crypto. All new users would need to do is scan a QR code and follow further instructions.

“This is extremely fast user onboarding,” says Charles Hoskinson.

The Cardano developers at Input Output want to integrate the most secure technologies so that users never risk losing their cryptocurrencies unintentionally. At the same time, they want to build bridges and reach users exactly where they are.

“You think: This has to be compatible with everyday software. If you look at the off-chain stuff, it also has to work with OneDrive, Google Drive, and all the others, because that’s where users are. They all use it. That’s why it has to work.”

Hoskinson is convinced of the concept. In just one week, a simple concept has already turned into a website. Developers should soon begin work to turn the idea into reality. Billions of users could be brought onto the blockchain, the American believes.

Why Hoskinson Is Planning Midnight Passport as a Central Hub

Hoskinson also announced that Midnight Passport is intended to serve as a central hub in the crypto ecosystem. Users should be able to trust that the information provided here is reliable and trustworthy.

“Midnight Passport isn’t just about a great user experience. We’re also thinking about how the entire system works together,” explains the 38-year-old.

It’s also about how different blockchains communicate with dApps. With a single mouse click, blockchains should be able to install their desired dApp.

“All of this needs to be linked with a fundamental layer of trust and a recovery system. If you lose your phone and thus your wallet, you can get it back. That’s how you attract a billion people.”

The typical blockchain user should no longer need to understand the underlying technology. But Passport isn’t just meant to become a hub for Cardano supporters. Many other cryptocurrencies should also find a home here.

“If we do our job right, users won’t even know they’re using crypto,” Hoskinson argues.

Thanks to Passport, switching between different dApps and blockchains should be seamless.

“Being able to offer the entire crypto world a unified experience is a very unique thing we’re implementing with Midnight”, he continues.
