Binance Founder CZ Invests in Aster

Binance founder Changpeng Zhao (CZ) is investing in Aster – the entrepreneur recently announced this via X. In a tweet, he made it clear that he would not hold the token short-term. Instead, he apparently views the investment as a long-term project.

“Full transparency: I just bought some Aster on Binance – with my own money. I am not a trader. I buy and hold,” wrote CZ.

On X, his message quickly attracted considerable attention. Usually, CZ does not publicly disclose that he invests in a specific cryptocurrency. According to his own statement, he rarely invests in a new project – he cites his own invention, BNB, as an example. He has held an investment in BNB for eight years.

The public disclosure quickly had an effect. Aster soared on Sunday. Initially trading at $0.91, the cryptocurrency reached a new regional high of around $1.25 just two hours later. Meanwhile, a correction has already occurred. As of press time, Aster is trading at $0.91 again. In the weekly trend, the token is showing significant losses of -15%.

Why Zhao Invests Specifically in Aster

What prompted Zhao to invest specifically in Aster? It is a DEX that is built in the style of a classic trading platform. Users can trade various cryptocurrencies at spot price (Spot Trading) or perpetual futures contracts (Perpetual Futures Trading).

Decentralized crypto exchanges (DEXs) like Aster are currently very popular. Hyperliquid – Aster’s biggest direct competitor – already started this trend in 2023. Compared to centralized crypto exchanges, this new class of DEXs is more convenient and reliable to use.

Only in October, when Binance, the world’s largest centralized crypto exchange, crashed, Hyperliquid and Aster remained reliably online and processed trades, which positively impacted the reputation of decentralized marketplaces in the crypto scene.

An important difference exists between the two projects: While Hyperliquid operates its own blockchain of the same name, Aster focuses on the integration of multiple blockchains. This also includes the BNB Chain founded by Binance.

Several former Binance employees are among the operators and developers of Aster. Accordingly, there are direct relationships with the crypto exchange’s team. Based on these relationships, Aster was able to secure an early investment from YZi Labs – an investment company of CZ.

While Hyperliquid has already shaped the industry as an avant-gardist and established the HYPE Token, Aster is a very young project that still offers a lot of room for fresh growth. Aster only went online in September 2025. Accordingly, investments from YZi Labs and CZ promised higher profits.

For CZ, Aster is particularly attractive, as he can profit not only from the rise of the DEX but also from the growth of the BNB ecosystem.

Hyperliquid and Aster pass on profits generated by trading fees to holders of their respective tokens.
