Spar officially introduces crypto payments in Swiss app
The retail chain Spar is introducing crypto payments in its Swiss app – the Swiss crypto service provider DFX announced this yesterday via X. Spar had already started a test run in the canton of Zug in the spring.
After the acceptance of cryptocurrencies met with approval, Spar announced in August the full integration of Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies. Since then, people in Switzerland have been able to pay for their purchases with Bitcoin, Ethereum, and the stablecoins USDC, DAI, USDT, dEURO, and ZCHF.
Around 140 Spar branches in Switzerland have since been equipped with the corresponding digital infrastructure by DFX. Swiss citizens have since also been able to purchase groceries with cryptocurrencies outside the canton of Zug.

With the latest coup, DFX makes shopping at Spar even easier. Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies can also be used via the Swiss branch of the Spar app in the future – instead of just in the local market as before.
“Crypto payments have now arrived in the Spar app!”, DFX headlined in its X post. “We are very pleased that Spar has integrated our OpenCryptoPay payment interface to enable crypto payments for everyone.”
To use the new option, customers must select the “add new card” option. Then they can select a compatible crypto wallet. At the time of the press release, the app supports 25 different wallets.
“Your daily shopping is now effortlessly crypto-friendly,” writes DFX.
Spar now supports more than 100 cryptocurrencies
Apparently, Spar now supports more than 100 cryptocurrencies through its app. DFX, however, did not disclose in the press release which coins exactly are supported.
Through the cooperation between DFX and Spar, crypto adoption is already being significantly promoted in large parts of Switzerland. An official map from Spar shows that around 140 branches can already process crypto payments on site.

Crypto payments via the Spar app, on the other hand, should also work in several dozen branches that do not yet provide on-site acceptance. Markets of the Spar brand and the Spar Express brand are supported.
