NFTs on the oldest crypto blockchain are currently all the rage. But how can you create Bitcoin Ordinals and forgo a node for inscription? Normally, this requires a fully synchronized network node. In the meantime, several service providers offer convenient services, so that a non-fungible token of your choice can be successfully created in just a few minutes.

Creating Bitcoin Ordinals: how Does it Work?

Ordinals is the name of a protocol introduced in January that enables native NFTs on Bitcoin. Inventor Casey Rodarmor does not call the non-fungible tokens on Bitcoin NFTs, but usually Inscriptions or digital artifacts. Despite different names, it is ultimately the same content.

But how do you create inscriptions of the Bitcoin Ordinals at all? Normally, you need a Bitcoin node that must be fully synchronized. Almost 500 gigabytes have to be downloaded for this.

Then the user has to download the Ord Wallet, which Rodarmor programmed for using Ordinals. After it has been filled with enough Satoshis, inscriptions can be created.

Depending on how actively users are already involved in the Bitcoin blockchain, this process can take up to several hours. Above all, many interested parties consider setting up a network node to be an obstacle.

The official instructions for a trustless creation of inscriptions can be found on the official Ordinals website.

Ordinals: how to Succeed with Inscription without a Node

Less than a month after the release of the Ordinals protocol, the first solutions already exist to conveniently create inscriptions. These methods are not trustless, but they work with significantly less time.

The functionality of the providers is always the same: They operate one or more Bitcoin nodes themselves and take over your order against payment of a fee. Two well-known service providers of this type are Gamma.io and Ordswap.io. Both websites are NFT marketplaces that focus on the newly created market of Bitcoin NFTs.

Ordswap overview
A look at the Ordswap user interface. Only a few clicks are needed for the inscription.

Ordswap automatically optimizes an image. A smaller file size achieved in this way leads to lower costs. However, the user can also do without this option or instead make a manual adjustment via websites such as Tinypng or Squoosh.

In a test by CoinPro, the cheapest offer could be found at Ordswap. For a price of the equivalent of 11.40 US dollars, a digital artifact with a file size of 17 kilobytes could be transferred to the Bitcoin blockchain.

Gamma, on the other hand, offers a wider range in the selection of network fees and, in contrast to Ordswap, transparently indicates the usage fees. If you are in a hurry, you should therefore rather use Gamma – unless you do not yet have a compatible wallet address.

Ordinals Wallet: What Do You Have to Consider?

Ordswap offers its users the option of creating an inscription before the client even has an Ordinals-compatible wallet. The service then keeps the NFT in custody until the user provides an address. An order number is used for identification, which the buyer must not lose under any circumstances.

So far, there are only a few wallets that actually support Ordinals. If a user sends their inscription to an incompatible address, it can be lost. Therefore, the greatest care is required when using Bitcoin NFTs.

The native wallet of the project, Ord Wallet, is just a product with a CLI user interface. Actions are performed on the command line. This offer is not an option for most interested parties.

Early users liked to use the Sparrow Wallet. Caution is also advised here. Experienced users recommend keeping only one NFT per address to avoid losses. This option is no longer recommended.

The Xverse Wallet and the Hiro Wallet are dedicated programs that are very easy to use. Xverse and Hiro implement the offer from Gamma.io. Inscriptions can be ordered directly from the wallet and land directly at your address. External custody is therefore not necessary.

A new program called Ordinals Wallet will also provide these comprehensive options in the near future. So far they are in progress. There is currently no public version of the wallet.
