Not-your-key (NYK)

What Does Not-your-key Mean?

The phrase “Not-your-key” is, strictly speaking, only one part of a saying known in the crypto scene. The full saying is: “Not your keys, not your coins”. This means that users only really own their coins and tokens if they have the necessary keys (private key or seed) for the wallet in which the cryptocurrencies are stored.

In particular, it is not recommended to store your own cryptocurrencies on exchanges. There, your own wallet addresses are usually hot wallets, even if crypto exchanges store the majority of the digital currencies via cold storage.
