The payment systems used are protected with cryptographic instruments, with the systems usually operating in a decentralized manner. Well-known cryptocurrencies are Bitcoin, Ethereum, and Ripple’s XRP. Especially in economically weak countries, where many people have no or only limited access to the traditional banking system (e.g. in various African countries), cryptocurrencies are increasingly developing into an alternative model to fiat money – especially in the private customer sector.
