The Swiss industry association for the blockchain sector is growing considerably. After Geneva joined only in September, the Canton of Bern now follows – it too is joining the Swiss Blockchain Federation. The association has around 80 members, some of whom are world-renowned. Bern aims to solidify its position as a crypto hub with this move.

Why Bern is Joining the Swiss Blockchain Federation
The Canton of Bern is joining the Swiss Blockchain Federation (SBF for short) – the canton itself announced this a few hours ago in a press release. Bern, alongside Geneva, Neuchâtel, Ticino, Zug, and Zurich, is thus the sixth canton of the Confederation to join the industry association.
The SBF advocates for the crypto industry by promoting favorable regulation in Switzerland. In doing so, it aims to represent not only the interests of its members but also the entire blockchain ecosystem. The Canton of Bern now wishes to align itself with this goal.
“By joining the Swiss Blockchain Federation (SBF), the Canton of Bern strengthens its role as a growing location for the Swiss blockchain industry,” it was stated in the public presentation.
Bern already sees itself strongly established in the areas of education and consulting. The Bernese tax administration has particularly advocated for joining the SBF. In the future, they particularly want to help shape the taxation framework.
“In addition to private sector actors, educational institutions such as the University of Bern are regularly involved in blockchain research, continuing education programs, and knowledge transfer,” wrote Bern’s Department of Finance.
“Beyond professional exchange, access to current developments and the opportunity to actively shape taxation framework conditions in the blockchain and crypto sector are particularly important to the Canton of Bern,” it continues.
World-renowned foundations organize themselves through the SBF
Already today, world-renowned companies and foundations from the crypto industry are organized within the Swiss Blockchain Federation. For example, the Solana Foundation, the Cardano Foundation, and the Web3 Foundation (developers of Polkadot) are members of the SBF.
Crypto service providers like Relai or Lido, and banks such as Sygnum, Julius Bär, or Postfinance, are also part of the industry association. In total, there are around 80 members.
The entire crypto industry in Switzerland, however, is much larger. Thus, according to SGE, as early as May, 1,749 companies from the Confederation were actively involved in Bitcoin and similar ventures.
The so-called Crypto Valley Zug accounts for by far the largest share with more than 719 organizations. Zurich follows in second place, at some distance – 264 crypto companies are registered there.
In addition to Swiss members, the SBF also receives support from Liechtenstein. According to SGE, 68 crypto companies were already based in the Principality in May.
The Swiss Blockchain Federation is led by President Heinz Tännler, Government Councillor and Finance Director of Zug. Among the experts consulted by the association is Luzius Meisser, who is spearheading the Swiss Bitcoin Initiative.
