White papers, known as Weisspapier in German, existed long before digital currencies. This type of document originally comes from the political sphere. They were collections of documents that states used to publish in order to inform and guide the public on political issues. They were often accompanied by explanations and justifications for the government’s actions in everyday political life. These white papers were published and distributed at regular intervals. Especially in the days before digital communication, they were the best way to get the public more involved in political events.

Nowadays, in addition to providing information, they also serve a much greater marketing purpose. Especially when it comes to cryptocurrencies or blockchain ideas, they are the only points of reference and basis for decision-making. They usually contain:

  • Overview of services
  • Advantages and disadvantages of the respective currency / the blockchain concept
  • Documentation of core codes (technical)
  • Standards and guidelines regarding use and application
  • Technical implementation
  • in part also the vision and further developments
